Dunk for Diabetes Program brings retired Raptor Mo Peterson to Cape Breton.

This past Sunday our youth enjoyed an awesome Closing Ceremony for our first session of Dunk for Diabetes, emceed by Scott Jackson.  Scott taught youth the basics of beat boxing before the introduction of our special guest and the skills and drills began.

In partnership with Sun Life Financial and the Toronto Raptors, Dunk for Diabetes is rolled out through the Boys & Girls Clubs of Canada (each club must apply to host this program and this year we were lucky to be chosen).  50 youth from our club participated in the 4 week program which concluded with a huge celebration event at Whitney Pier Memorial Middle School.  Youth demonstrated their skills through drills facilitated by special guest Mo Peterson, coaches from Basketball NS, Basketball Cape Breton as well as their youth workers (who coached the youth through the entire program).  A variety of drills were run at four stations in the gym followed by a healthy snack and food education lead by a nutritionist.

This program combines basketball with food education to encourage healthy active lifestyles and choices among youth.  Each week youth participated in drills and activities which kept them active and also learned about prevention of type 2 diabetes.
